The Stone Circle of Achavanich, near the banks of Loch Stemster are one of the more iconic archaeological sites in Caithness. They are situated just off the main A9 to Thurso, and close to some other archaeological circles and stones around Smerral. This is an example of a circle with the stones facing the line of the circle, rather than the centre, and it isn't so much a circle as an oval.
Guidebest Stone Circle
A hidden treasure in Caithness, this lovely stone circle sits just a few miles South of Achavanich, again not far off the main A9 route to Thurso, but is hidden away amongst some trees and above a burn. It is another example of a circle where the stones face the direction of the circle, not in toward the centre.
