Whales

Somewhat shyer than the dolphins with which they share Caithness’s waters, a number of whale species are known to frequent the seas around northern Scotland. Most notable are orcas or killer whales (in fact the largest members of the dolphin family!), who often migrate between Scotland and Iceland and who have been spotted from locations such as John O’ Groats, Duncansby Head, and even Thurso Bay. In deeper waters, you might see humpback whales, minke whales, and fin whales – so be sure to take a boat trip if you are hoping to see them!
